Why does the peanut gallery have the power?

We work hard. We are understaffed. Most of us know how to do our jobs and we do our jobs well. What makes TPTB think that they know how to “fix” things when they don’t even know how we work?

My friend Kristine commented that a certain person was part of the peanut gallery. It’s an apt comparison. The peanut gallery sits back and watches, not quite understanding the process, then offers up suggestions that in their limited knowledge might work. So it is with TPTB, the peanut gallery at work. They offer solutions to problems but they don’t take any consideration into what we might have to offer. Peanut gallery indeed. Alas for us, it’s a peanut gallery with the power.

I still say that the most simple and effective solution is MORE STAFF.

Now here’s where I must vent. (Geez, baseball season is over and I get to vent about work. Gads.)

The power peanut visited us yet again during muster and gave us more details about the newest procedure, etc. Then he went on and “warned” us that the bid was coming up in January and he would be getting together with our immediate supervisors and going over all the positions in the office. If they saw any problem areas (ie employees), those people would be moved elsewhere. He also mentioned that sick leave would be a major factor.

I could not help but feel that he was threatening us. If you “abuse” your sick leave, you’re not going to stay in the office. If you’re not up to their standards (whatever those might be at the time), you’re out.

He made a very small point of saying that he didn’t mean the ones who come in, do their jobs, and basically do good work. And he was so dismissive of those people, as if most of us were not those people when in actuality, most of us are those people.

I was insulted and offended by his tone and his words. So damn condescending and yet so cool about it.

And by the end of the night, I wasn’t feeling too good. I still feel a little out of it. We’ll see how I am in the morning…
