22 November 2002

Yeah, so I took a quiz. We’ve been watching Charmed lately (it’s playing on TNT) and I even wondered aloud last night on whether or not someone had come up with a “Which Charmed One Are You?” quiz. LOL! And then I found one! 😀 If you want to try your hand, click on the picture. 😉

Oh, and I knew I was Piper. 😛

THE WOES OF WORK…

Everytime a holiday rolls around, tensions rise and it’s a stressful time until TPTB figure out what they want to do with everyone. It just makes me sick.

I heard something today that made me quite angry. One of the supervisors made an off hand remark that went something like, “And Noble never works holidays.” This person said it after I left, loud enough for the whole office to hear. Two people told me about it tonight and I was livid. If this supervisor has a problem with me, then the words should be spoken to me. It shouldn’t be some off hand comment made in the office for everyone to hear. Yeah, I don’t like to work the holidays, mostly because my position has to do with the courts and the courts aren’t open on holidays, so why work? But is my worth as an employee measured by how many holidays I work or don’t work? Am I a lesser employee because I don’t like working on holidays?

I will admit this freely– I DO NOT LIKE WORKING ON THE HOLIDAYS. But I also understand the responsibilities of the department and I understand the issue of employee shortages. I just don’t think it’s necessary to have me at work on holidays. No courts. No court paperwork. No court paperwork for me. That’s my function, that’s what my position entails. Why is it so difficult for some people to understand? Factor in that the person before me had the holidays off, unless she chose to work. Why did it change for me?

No one can answer without going around in circles.

I’ve heard excuses. You’re assigned here, not the courts. It wouldn’t be fair to everyone else. Seniority doesn’t count. Etc, etc.

Why don’t they see the logic of “no court paperwork, no need for the person who processes the court paperwork”? It’s so simple. If someone asks, just give them that answer. That’s what I would say if someone actually had the nerve to say “Why don’t you ever have to work the holidays?” My answer, “Because there are no courts.”

Morale is low. The more we struggle against it, the more we’re subdued. Stretch us, hammer us, beat us. One day, something is going to break. One day, it’s just going to fall apart, shatter.

I work hard. My job is not easy. I’m not saying no one could learn to do it, but it takes a lot out of you. Yet I enjoy it. I just don’t enjoy all the little games and power plays and insinuations and manipulations. I’m tired of the lack of appreciation, the indifference, the ignorance continually shown by “those in charge.”

Bottom line– I want my holidays off. I don’t want to have to worry about putting a holiday card in or waiting for the supervisor to figure things out. Hey, I’m saving them money if I’m not there. Because really, how do they explain, budget-wise, my odd hours on a holiday?

And where did all the greedy bastards go? We used to have plenty of people who wanted to work the holidays for the money!

For me, TIME is more important than money. I’d rather be with my loved ones than making double time and a half in a dungeon…
