14 October 2002

We went to Sunday’s Giants/Cardinals game. The Cardinals lost (alas!), 3-4.

RANT MODE: ON

Yes, I must rant. Okay, so I’m at the game with the husband who is of course supporting his team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Automatic leave for the Giants fans to vent their hostilities and talk smack to him, around him, about him, below him, etc. I understand that. Hey, if it makes you feel better, go to it. BUT that does not give anyone the right to try and start crap just because he’s a Cardinals.

Case in point: The guys in the front row didn’t want to let him and his buddy back to our seats. Because of the Cards hat? Likely. Because of the constant flow of beer? Even more likely. So guys in the front want to talk, let them talk. Guy in the second row starts screaming, “Get this guy out of here, he’s trying to start trouble!” Well, he wasn’t and guy in the second row needed to sit down and shut up. I told him so. I was starting to get mad. I might have been unladylike and thrown a few obscenities his way. Whatever. Act like an a**hole and get called one by a girl. Boo hoo.

But pasty face boy in front of me decides to get into the mix. He’s not friends with the guys in front, but he wants to start something. He wanted to the moment he saw the husband with the Cards cap. He’s trying to start something and I tell him to sit down and shut up. Perhaps I did the unladylike thing again. But he tells me, “Shut up, bitch.” Oh hell, when husband heard that, it was on. He, who was not having a problem with anyone (he respects the fans supporting their teams and understands the lure of alcohol), is now pissed. He asks the pasty face guy, “What did you say?” The guy doesn’t realize that he crossed the line. When the husband said something about, “What did you call my *wife?*”, the pasty face guy hesitated, fear crossing his face. I almost wanted to laugh. Except he sat back and smirked and that just ticked the husband off even more! An idle threat, not so idle, and the pasty face guy suddenly wants to “take it outside.” Outside? We’re in a baseball stadium, WE ARE OUTSIDE! Pasty face guy gets out of his seat to “take it outside,” but husband stays in his seat.

Funny, the pasty face guy never came back to watch the game. In fact, his friend ran off too and they never came back. A shame too, their Giants won. He probably got his ass kicked “outside” because he was obviously spoiling for a fight. Stupid stupid stupid.

I guess my rant goes something like this: Why are Giants fans so hostile? Perhaps I should not have worried about it so much, but it did spoil my enjoyment of the game a bit. And I should have been happy to be there. Pac Bell Park is BEAUTIFUL and the night was lovely and baseball was on the field. It’s the LCS, for goodness’ sake! Even though the Cards lost, I should have been happy to experience the exuberance of the other fans. The roar at the end of the ninth inning was magnificent to behold. Too bad I’m not a Giants fan.

But I’m disappointed by the actions of a couple of the fans around me. They seemed to have forgotten that it is merely a game that we all watch. It’s BASEBALL. Shouldn’t we just be happy that we’re there to watch two good teams battle it out? There’s no need to battle it out in the crowd.

So, I didn’t have that “ah, baseball!” feeling. The STUPID people spoiled it for me a bit. Or maybe I’m still bitter about my dear, beloved A’s. Plus I really did want the Cardinals to win. I wanted this Giants home crowd to feel the anguish I felt last Sunday. I guess I’m just selfish.

And men, don’t call a man’s wife a “bitch.” I think it’s a line that you know you shouldn’t cross.

RANT MODE: OFF

OOOHHHH! I scanned the pictures and they’re up! 😀 Find them if you can…

I don’t have to work today! Groovay!
