6 October 2002

Hear that? The shattering. The hard thud. My heart breaking.

The A’s fall to the Twins, 4-5 in the final game of their season. No tomorrow for my boys. Only a bunch of tomorrows until the 2003 season. Rest? Yeah, lots of rest for the boys of green and gold. Didn’t they want it?

Sure, they wanted it. Mark Ellis wanted it when he hit that three run homer in the bottom of the ninth to pull the A’s within one. Mark Mulder wanted it when he shut the Twins down after giving up two runs. Ray Durham wanted it when he hit that home run back in the third to make the score 1-2.

Aww, but Billy Koch. You blew it, buddy. All you had to do was keep that score 1-2. You knew your boys could come back. Somehow, someway. But instead you give up three runs in the ninth. It was a bad outing for you. It was a heart-breaker for us.

Ellis, you gave us that sliver of hope. Thank you so much. And Chavy, you started it all with that single in the ninth. You had a good series for sure. And I even have to say thanks to Justice. It took the whole season for me to take you to heart.

Later, I’ll be utterly grateful for this crazy ride we’ll call the 2002 season. 2002 American League West Champions. Keepers of the 20 game win streak. Barry Zito. Mark Mulder. Tim Hudson. Miguel Tejada. Eric Chavez. Just some of “my boys.” In my eyes, you are all the best.

But right now, let me wallow in my sorrow.

My boys lost.

And it hurts…
