Driver killed in crash had been texting
HIGHLAND — Authorities say a 16-year-old girl who died after losing control of her car had been texting on her cell phone moments before the accident.
Kayla Preuss, of Highland, was driving on the Interstate 10 Freeway in Redlands when she lost control of her car and crashed. She died of head injuries.
Authorities say Preuss had been driving drunk and was speeding. But another factor may have contributed to the crash.
Phone records show Preuss was texting just before the accident. Her cell phone, which was flipped open, was found resting on the floorboard by her feet.
Preuss’ mother Kelly said she hopes the accident will make other people think before texting and driving.
Personally, I think the more important thing is the DRIVING DRUNK AND SPEEDING part. Oh yes, I’m sure the texting didn’t help, but to blame that and not mention the DRIVING DRUNK AND SPEEDING is glossing over the whole point, don’t you think? Texting should not be the main focus of this article. The main focus should be:
- Teenage driver (age 16) was speeding.
- Teenage driver (age 16) was DRIVING DRUNK.
To me, anything else is besides the point.
Although I do wonder this: What were her last texts? And who was she texting?

I met Breelyn within 24 hours of her birth. The youngest person I’ve ever met! She’s adorable, of course. Lots of hair. And tiny! 6lbs 3oz. Awwww! 🙂
